Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G: a new era of Pixel phones
Google Pixel 5 is already available for pre-order in some countries and it will be available this month in the market. Pixel 4a 5G will be available only in Japan for now on 15th October and then in Mid-November in other countries. With the announcement of these two phones, Google is entering the 5G market in a suitable Google style.
The earlier Google Nexus or Pixel phones created a lot of interest in the market. However, lately, Google was falling behind with expensive releases focusing primarily on camera and complete Android experience. It didn’t seem enough for the mass especially with the higher price tag. Both Pixel 5 and 4a 5G are priced significantly lower than last year’s Pixel 4 and 4 XL. Pixel 5 will cost you $700 or €630 (৳62,900) and the 4a 5G is priced at $500/€500 (৳49,900).
Pixel 5
We expected a complete Google, Android and 5G experience with this phone in the long run and Google didn’t disappoint us. Given that we have seen such an attractive release from Google for a long time. The slogan of the phone is “The ultimate 5G Google phone”. You are paying a relatively high price, but it’s quite low compared to about €1,000 price tag of Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra or iPhone 11 Pro. The iPhone here is also not coming with 5G. We have to wait a few more days for the release of the iPhone 12 series with 5G. For a €630 price, Google is offering the following: A waterproof aluminum body with Gorilla Glass 6 protection in the front 5G support, excellent overall connectivity 6 inches Full HD+ OLED always-on display with 90Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ Top-notch in the industry Pixel cameras, better than the previous ones used in Pixel 4 and 4 XL. Finally a big 4080 mAh battery with 18W fast charging, wireless and reverse charging Stock Android 11 out of the box with at least three years of update (till Android 14) A high-mid range Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G (7 nm) chipset, 8 GB RAM with Google hardware and software optimization. Now, let us mention a few disadvantages: No WiFi 6 No Facial Recognition / Face Unlock feature High-mid range Snapdragon 700 series chipset instead of flagship Snapdragon 800 series chipset. If you see the main features and the cost, it does finally look like an all-rounder phone suitable for contemporary users as well as for Google / Android fans. There is no WiFi 6 so your WiFi connection will not be up to date and it will run on the regular WiFi 5. But it’s just a minor issue in the long run since most users are expected to make use of the 5G connectivity. There is no facial recognition feature but it might as well be a benefit for those who are super picky and concerned about the security of their data. There is a back-mounted fingerprint sensor and it is always a more secure option and preferred over face unlock for most users. The chipset is however the biggest discussion. The truth is, if Google used a flagship chipset, the price could have gone up at least 100 bucks and then it will be too much to consider for many users including me. When you have the Google Hardware and Software optimization as well as Stock Android and 8 GB RAM, this chipset will perform like a flagship chipset provided in many other flagship phones. We have always wondered how Apple’s 4 GB RAM iPhones perform better than many 8 GB RAM phones? Of course because of finer engineering or optimization of the phone altogether. The same goes for Pixel 5. So, you should not have any lag in the long-run.
